Generational Rot

Every generation inherits what the previous one leaves behind.

Assets arrive with liabilities. Infrastructure arrives with maintenance. Institutions arrive with obligations accumulated long before their current occupants assumed control.

The asymmetry is simple: the people receiving the benefit are present when the decision is made. The people receiving the cost may not be.

The future is absent from the transaction.

It cannot vote against the debt, price the damage, refuse the liability, or negotiate the terms of inheritance.

That makes time useful.

Maintenance can be deferred. Debt can move expenditure forward and repayment backward. Resources can be consumed before replacement becomes necessary. Damage can remain outside the transaction until its consequences become expensive enough to enter it.

The benefit stays in the present.

The cost moves.

This does not require one generation conspiring against the next. It requires a system that rewards present consumption while allowing consequences to cross the boundary between them.

Political terms end. Executives retire. Assets change hands. Institutions change leadership.

The people who made the decision separate from the conditions the decision produced.

Responsibility decays faster than consequence.

By the time the deferred cost arrives, its origin has become history. Infrastructure requires repair. Debt requires servicing. Institutions operate under obligations accumulated by people no longer responsible for them.

The inheritance appears natural because the transaction that created it has disappeared.

Yesterday’s extraction becomes today’s obligation.

Yesterday’s exception becomes today’s baseline.

Yesterday’s deferred maintenance becomes today’s emergency.

Then the inheritors become the decision-makers.

They enter downstream from choices they could not influence and gain control over choices whose full consequences they may never experience.

The participants change.

The asymmetry does not.

The future cannot refuse the inheritance.

That is why the bill keeps being sent there.
